CBD Dosage Overview: Finding the Right Mg Dose for You

Posted on December 15th, 2022 to Cannabinoids by

Cannabidiol (CBD) has grown to be a bit of a household cannabinoid for a lot of the country. Often known as the non-intoxicating cannabinoid, CBD is prized for its therapeutic value. However, finding the right CBD dose for you can take a bit of trial and error, as well as a good understanding of different types of products. Find out how to determine the right CBD dosage level for you, influencing factors, and more below.

First, Factors That Influence the Best CBD Dosage for You

CBD dosage is a bit ambiguous and highly dependent on the personal circumstances of the individual. This is why you won’t see a precise dosage guideline when you purchase something like CBD/CBN/CBG Orange Omega Oil Tincture from Southern Sky. There are numerous factors that can influence how much CBD you may need.

Prior Cannabinoid Use

Cannabinoid sensitivity is reliant in part on how much your body has been exposed to cannabinoids. For example, an individual that consistently uses cannabis may need a higher dose of CBD to take advantage of the therapeutic effects. Likewise, someone who has never used cannabinoids at all may be more sensitive to the effects of CBD.

Reason for Taking CBD

CBD is rapidly growing to be one of the most extensively studied cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes. The cannabinoid may help with a vast array of issues, and each issue may have a unique target dose that works. For instance, a lot of people use CBD to help with stress or anxious thoughts, while many others use the cannabinoid for pain. Research indicates pain patients may need higher doses to see substantial benefits than those using CBD for stress.

Type of Product

The type of product you use can also have a bearing on how much CBD you need. CBD can be derived from both hemp and high-THC cannabis, and both types can have different effects because CBD from hemp has fractional amounts of THC, and CBD from cannabis can come with higher THC doses (more on this below). The method of consumption also affects the proper dose. For example, a CBD vape delivers effects quickly and a CBD edible delivers effects slowly. Therefore, the dose may need to be adjusted to accommodate for the various onset of effects.

A Note on CBD from Different Sources

Mississippi is on the cusp of medical marijuana legalization. Therefore, dispensaries will eventually be open to consumers that have been approved for medical cannabis use. With this in mind, it is important to emphasize that CBD can come from different sources that fall on different points of the psychoactivity spectrum.

Currently, products available in MS that contain CBD are made using extracts from hemp, which by nature has minimal THC content. In fact, in order to be legally sold right now, CBD products cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC. For example, Southern Sky’s CBD/CBN Sleep Gummies are made from hemp extracts and contain no more than 0.3 percent THC. These products will not cause intoxication or euphoria.

In the future, once medical dispensaries are open to MS residents, CBD derived from what is classified as “marijuana” may also be available. For example, you may see a high-CBD flower strain or a CBD tincture. The difference with these products is they will also contain higher levels of THC. A good example is Charlotte’s Web flower, which is one of the most recognized medical strains of cannabis. Charlotte’s Web is considered a “CBD strain” because it has a high amount of CBD compared to THC. However, the strain contains at least one percent THC, depending on the grower. Therefore, some slight level of euphoria may be possible.

Both CBD products from hemp and cannabis have their value. However, it is important to note the differences between different products by knowing the source of the product (hemp vs marijuana) and examining the cannabinoid profile of any particular product. The presence of THC can completely alter your experience with a CBD product.

CBD Dosage with CBD Products from Hemp

The safe starting point for most people looking for therapeutic benefits from CBD without intoxicating effects is CBD products derived from hemp. Human studies have examined hemp-derived CBD doses from as little as 20mg to as much as 1,500mg daily. And, very few negative side effects have surfaced with even high doses. However, the best plan of action is to start with a low dose of CBD and work your way up based on your individual needs.

For example, a good starting point could be somewhere around 20 to 40mg of CBD for most people. If you start at this dose, wait several days or even up to a week to determine if that dose is working for you. If not, increase your dose by 5mg during the second week and monitor your experience. You can continue increasing your CBD dose in this way until you see the desired results.

Keep in mind, CBD benefits don’t always show up immediately. A lot of people assume a CBD product is not working for them when they have actually not found the right dose or given the body time to react.

Calculating CBD Doses with Different Types of Products

Some CBD products are easier than others to accurately dose. For example, gummies are often convenient because each gummy will have a specific number of milligrams, such as 25 or 50mg of CBD. CBD capsules offer the same level of convenience. CBD oils and tinctures tell you how many milligrams of CBD is in a full bottle. For example, a 30mL bottle of CBD oil may contain 1,000mg of CBD. Therefore, one mL of the tincture would offer around 33mg of CBD.

Can You Take Too Much CBD?

You can take too much of just about anything, including CBD. However, taking so much that you have a negative reaction would be a rarity. To date, there has been no lethal level of CBD determined. Some studies have tested extreme dosage levels of up to 20,000mg, which is considered a toxic enough level to cause side effects but not a life-threatening situation. If you do take a bit too much for yourself personally, you may experience side effects like dry mouth, nausea, or fatigue, but these symptoms should subside quickly.
