How to Get a Medical Marijuana (MMJ) Card in Mississippi

Posted on July 27th, 2022 to Education by

The legalization of recreational and medical marijuana has started to make leaps and bounds in the United States. In just a few years, states that have legalized cannabis in some way have gone from being in the small minority to the vast majority.

With Mississippi joining the list of states that have legalized medical marijuana this year, you now have to chance to take advantage of the law and give Mother Earth’s prescription a chance. In order to do so, you must first obtain a medical card. Today, we are here to provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to do so.

First, is weed legal in Mississippi?

Medical marijuana is legal in Mississippi. However, it is not legal for recreational use. In order to legally purchase cannabis in Mississippi, you will need a medical card.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana (MMJ) Card in Mississippi

In order to qualify for a medical marijuana card in Mississippi, you must have at least one of these qualifying medical conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Epilepsy or other seizures
  • Spastic quadriplegia
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) positive status
  • AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)
  • Hepatitis
  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Agitation of dementia
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Autism
  • Pain refractory to appropriate opioid management
  • Diabetic/peripheral neuropathy
  • Spinal cord disease or severe injury

What’s next?

After you’ve figured out that you qualify for a medical marijuana card, you must then be verified by a physician. This means that a doctor that participates in the medical cannabis program must acknowledge that you have one of the qualifying medical conditions, and agree that the benefits of medical marijuana will outweigh the risks in treating you. Once they do this, they will then register your certification for medical cannabis use with the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program.

When you are approved, you must apply to the Medical Cannabis Program as a patient within 60 days of receiving your medical certification. As you are approved, you will receive an electronic identification card that can be used at medical cannabis dispensaries in Mississippi.

Where to Get Medical Marijuana in Mississippi

Once you have your card, the next step is to find a medical marijuana treatment center (dispensary) near you so you can start receiving and using medical cannabis. Unfortunately, since medical marijuana in Mississippi has only been legalized this year, the state is still in the preparation phase of making the medicine readily available to patients.

The State Department of Revenue started accepting dispensary license applications from dispensary owners in July 2022, so preparations for the opening of medical marijuana dispensaries are still in the works, and patients still have a wait on their hands. Luckily, that wait should only be a few months long, and treatment centers should start popping up and opening around the state in late 2022.

But, you’re on the right page, because at Southern Sky, we are at the forefront of the Mississippi Medical Cannabis movement. Aggressively preparing for the launch of medical marijuana treatment centers in the state, our farm-to-patient company will make sure that medical marijuana patients in Mississippi will be able to get everything they need to start their treatment.
